Plans have been unveiled to relocate Edenfield Post Office to a new home — 200 metres away.

The proposed location for the new office is at Strachan’s Chemist, 2-9 Market Street, just further along from its current branch at 123 Market Street.

The Post Office says the “majority” of post office services and products will still be available in an open-plan, modern branch alongside the chemist.

Opening hours at the new branch are set to be 9am to 6pm, Mondays to Fridays, and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays — four hours a week more than currently offered.

Residents are being invited to give their opinions on the move during a six-week public consultation, which will close on September 17.

Adrian Wales, Post Office regional network manager for central England, said: “We understand how important having a post office is to residents in Edenfield and we are confident that this new modern branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

“The modernisation is part of a major investment programme to convert the Post Office network to new-style branches and this investment, the largest in the history of the Post Office, makes a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”

The new Post Office “local” initiative is part of a new concept to deliver both post office and retail products in an open plan counter.

Disabled access at the new branch is set to be improved, with a hearing loop and space for a wheelchair available inside the premesis.

After the public consultation has finished, the move is scheduled to take place in October.
