PART of a road could be closed on match days as part of a safety initiative.
When Bury FC and FC United of Manchester play home games at Gigg Lane, stewards now have the power to close Gigg Lane from Nelson Street to Brierley Street when matches end to allow coaches carrying the visiting supporters to leave the area.
Stewards have also been given the power to put “no parking” cones along Gigg Lane to reduce road obstructions.
Previously, only Bury Council staff or police could place the cones.
A Bury Council spokesman said: “The temporary prohibition of driving will be implemented for a short period of time for safety reasons when it is determined that it is preferable to allow away team supporters access to coaches directly outside the stadium.
“A decision on where to place cones on match days will depend on the occasion and whether or not a high attendance is expected or issues associated with large crowds .”
