A ROBBER armed with an air pistol targeted a betting shop in Prestwich for cash.

The robbery happened at Betfred in Bury New Road just before 11am on Friday, December 21.

The man threatened staff and stole a small amount of cash.

He left the weapon at the scene. It was not fired and nobody was injured.

He fled on foot before getting onto a bicycle. He rode off in the direction of Butterstile Lane.

Armed officers attended as a precaution.

The offender is described as being white, in his early to mid-30s, 6ft tall and of a gangly build. He was wearing a black jacket, a woollen hat, a black scarf and large sunglasses.

Det Con Andrew Pidd, of Bury CID, said: “Although this weapon was not fired, and turned out to be an air pistol, these firearms look so real there is no way the staff inside the store could have suspected it was anything other than a genuine gun, and were understandably scared.

“We therefore need to trace this man and bring him to justice.

“I would appeal to anyone who has information about this robbery, or perhaps thinks they know who might be involved, to call us.

“If you saw this man fleeing the bookmakers, or perhaps riding the bicycle as he made his escape, then we need to hear from you.”

People with information about the robbery should call police on 0161 856 8210 or the Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
