HOW does Bury Council justify fining a woman for throwing a cigarette out of her car (Bury Times, November 2) when from Monday to Friday, various council staff from the town hall cross Knowsley Street and stand in Townside Fields in groups, smoking - then discard their cigarettes on the ground?
How come these people are not fined £50 for each cigarette they drop?
Townside Fields is already neglected by the council and littered with decaying rubbish. This does not mean that staff from the town hall should add to the eyesore.
Coun John Byrne, executive member for transport and the environment, stated hopefully that the fine would deter people from throwing rubbish about the borough. It would appear that if you work for Bury Council you are exempt from this fine.
