BURY Council has appointed a new executive director of environment and development services.
Graham Atkinson takes over the post from Philip Allen, who died from cancer earlier this year.
He is now responsible for 2,600 staff across the council. His department looks after the roads, parks, markets, planning, trading standards, licensing and urban renewal.
"Philip will be an extremely hard act to follow," he said. "He created an excellent department with a phenomenal team spirit, dedicated to improving the borough."
He added: "There are some major things happening in Bury right now around the town centre development, Pimhole regeneration and the Reinventing Radcliffe project. The waste and recycling agenda is a vital area of work, as is the council's commitment to climate change. I am really honoured to spearhead such projects."
Graham has worked for the council for 18 years, starting as sports centre manager for Goshen Sports Centre, Castle Leisure Centre and Market Street Athletics Track. He lives in Warrington with his wife and two teenage sons.
Mr Mark Sanders, chief executive, said: "Graham's appointment is great news for Bury. It was a barnstorming interview built upon solid achievements in his previous position."
l Mr Atkinson is keeping Philip Allen's memory alive by taking part in the 106-mile challenge for Bury Hospice.
It costs £106 for one hour of care at the Dumers Lane hospice, which is asking residents to run, walk, cycle or swim 106 miles in their own time during autumn.
Graham, who has run marathons and competed in a swimathon, aims to complete the challenge in eight weeks.
"The hospice was a great source of comfort and help for Philip during his illness," he said. "Philip touched the lives of so many people and I hope that I can raise money on his behalf to help others like him."
