BURY’S fantastic FA Cup win on Tuesday night provided a welcome boost to their coffers but I remain worried about the club’s financial situation.
Whether or not the court date goes ahead, the fact HMRC felt the need to seek a winding up petition should ring alarm bells.
I know I am not alone in being concerned by this week’s revelations.
You could sense the relief on the terraces at Bradford, the fans knew just how important that win was to Bury’s immediate future.
But just how has it come to this – that the Shakers need to win in the FA Cup to shore up their finances?
Fair play to the chairman, Stewart Day, he has come in and saved this club, but I feel there are a lot of questions that need to be answered about how the club is now being run.
It just seems there is a boom or bust approach.
Moving into Carrington and signing players like Leon Clarke made the football world sit up and take notice.
But everyone was asking how a club like Bury could afford it.
Day was clearly hoping to attract more fans, sponsorship and commercial revenue on the back of their success, and the club has made strides in that regard.
But with a club the size of Bury, extra bums on seats were never going to be able to plug the gap between income and expenditure.
The approach just does not make sense.
If you can only afford a Mini, then you don’t go out and buy a Ferrari. If you can only afford a terraced house then you don’t go out and buy a million-pound pad.
If you can only afford to train at Lower Gigg then it stands to reason you don’t move into a place like Carrington. Fans, understandably, are asking me what Bury must be paying for it, and the truth is we just don’t know.
I admire the ambition, but we have seen what that kind of ambition has done to clubs like Leeds United.
There are other examples closer to home, just look at neighbours Bolton. It has to be nipped in the bud at Bury before it goes that far.
So I would urge Mr Day to explain what has been happening behind the scenes and what they plan to do about it because myself and the fans who have stuck with Bury through thick and thin are worried.
