A NATIONAL society which promotes care for tortoises held its regional ‘autumn weigh-in’ in Bury.

The British Chelonia Group invited tortoise and terrapin owners to come to Wilkinsons, in The Rock, for a health check-up for their pets.

And John Thorp, the group’s Northern Regional Chairman, said the event was a success and helped raised awareness of the animals’ general wellbeing, not just physical health.

“We had several new owners who turned up for the checks which was good to see, of course, because we are always looking to reach new people,” he said.

“Hopefully we’ve sent them away with a bit more awareness of how to look after their tortoises correctly.

“Unfortunately, people can think of tortoises as living stones which don’t have feelings or emotions, and that you can just throw them a lettuce leaf from time to time.

“In fact, they can have very good lives if they have interaction with people and other tortoises.”

Twenty-six tortoise owners and their animals turned out for the health check event, which has been running for over 25 years and helping owners to care for their pets with the benefit of free advice and information.

Mr Thorp added: “Tortoises and terrapins are often very poorly understood, and the event aims to dispel the myths about them and improve their lives.

“Checks include weight, size, and general health, and help to establish whether an animal is thriving or merely surviving.”

Ian Mostyn, a veterinary surgeon from Pennine Vets in Tottington, officiated at the event and carried out the health checks.
